Michael W. Deem is an American engineer, scientist, inventor, and entrepreneur. Michael Deem is an experienced senior professional who has operated in senior management, Board, and advisor capacities with companies ranging from start-up, to rapid growth, to large multi-national companies. Currently General Partner at SmartHealth Catalyzer and CEO of a startup. Previously an Entrepreneur in Residence with Khosla Ventures.
Michael Deem attended the California Institute of Technology after graduating from high school. He completed his undergraduate studies before enrolling in the University of California's PhD program. He successfully defended his thesis, received his PhD, and transferred to Harvard University. He continued to push himself to study more, achieve more, and discover more, and he completed his postdoctoral program at Harvard before continuing his research in both academia and industry.
Michael Deem, a research scientist, was named Director of Drug Design at CuraGen Corporation. He was in charge of directing a wide range of research activities aimed at discovering new treatments for a variety of injuries and ailments. He would investigate potential therapeutic targets, consult with a variety of experts to determine which targets were feasible, and coordinate funding for various research initiatives in an effort to get new pharmaceutical products off the ground. This gave him extensive experience in developing novel treatments from start to end.
Michael Deem has served as a faculty chair in addition to his job as a research scientist. Michael Deem recently served as the chair of the Bioengineering Department at Rice University. He was in charge of supervising a massive department. He was responsible for 20 tenure-track professors, 5 non-tenure-track instructors, 200 undergraduate students, and 125 graduate students. The Department's yearly budget was around $27 million. Michael was also the Founding Director of the Graduate Program in Systems, Synthetic, and Physical Biology at Rice University, the first PhD program in the US with 'Synthetic Biology' in the title.
Michael Deem also ensured that the research was adequately funded. He was in charge of a diverse group of academic members. Biomaterials, tissue engineering, machine learning, multimodal imaging, cancer research, and basic physics are a few examples. Every member of the department wants his or her study subject to be adequately funded, and it was Michael W. Deem's responsibility to both fundraise for the department and distribute the resources that were available.
Faculty members in the department published research publications in a variety of fields, pushing the boundaries of science and elevating the institution's reputation. During his tenure at Rice, the department thrived, consistently ranking as one of the top ten colleges in the United States for biomedical engineering. In addition, during his tenure at Rice University, Michael Deem was named the John W. Cox Professor in recognition of his work and leadership.
Michael Deem has worked with a variety of smaller life science businesses in addition to running enormously big departments such as the one at Rice University. Deem, for example, just completed a year as an entrepreneur in residence at Khosla Ventures. He was in charge of looking at new, up-and-coming enterprises and selecting the best portfolio for Khosla. He was also in charge of taking new businesses from idea to reality. Once the companies were chosen, he was in charge of guiding the young entrepreneurs and start-up businesses through the process. There, he was exposed to a wide range of innovative new ideas for future technology, and he was able to improve his commercial skills. He was able to help several businesses from the bottom up by selecting the right firms, giving them with the resources they needed, and educating the young professionals along the way.
Even though Michael Deem spends the most of his time working, he finds time to give back to the community. He has helped several graduate students, undergraduate students, and postdoctoral researchers further their careers by serving as a mentor. He assists students with research projects, reviews research papers, and assists new faculty members in getting their information published. This human capital development was really rewarding. Deem has also served on a variety of for-profit and non-profit boards, working with CEOs to develop strategies and build companies.
Michael Deem believes in staying fit. He believes that by taking care of your physical health, you can protect your mental health as well. In his spare time, he enjoys martial arts, notably Taekwondo, as well as rock climbing. He likes exploring the outdoors, and rock climbing enables him to do so. Finally, he spends a lot of time with his family and friends, maintaining the bonds that have been so important to him over the years.
